A New Westminster city councillor is striving to help folks in crisis for his birthday.
Coun. Jaimie McEvoy, whose birthday is Aug. 14, posted a message on Facebook saying he’s asking for donations to the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of B.C. for his birthday this year. He surpassed his $250 fundraising goal by raising $457 as of the Record’s deadline.
“I’ve chosen this non-profit because their mission means a lot to me, and I hope you’ll consider contributing as a way to celebrate with me,” he wrote. “Every little bit will help me reaching my goal.”
The non-profit provides a variety of services and programs that educate, train and support individuals and communities. This includes training and supporting volunteers and paid responders, who deliver phone-and internet-based emotional support and suicide prevention and intervention services for youth, adults and seniors across B.C.; providing wellness and resiliency workshops in B.C. schools; offering training in suicide awareness and response, skills for dealing with distress, and self-care workshops to community members and service organizations so they can better support individuals in the community.
