Community members are encouraged to take part in this weekend's shoreline cleanup in Queensborough.

Community members are invited to help out at this year’s Queensborough Shoreline Cleanup.

The fall cleanup, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 28, will focus on picking up garbage along the shoreline and planting a few native plants.

“Our Spring Blackberry Knockout event had over 25 sets of hands, removing a large amount of emerging blackberries and other invasive plants, in preparation for this fall effort,” shoreline cleanup coordinator Laurel Wright said in an email to the Record.

With funding from an environmental grant from the City of New Westminster, the Queensborough Special Programs committee is proud to co-ordinate local community volunteers and provide plants, snacks, kids activities in this family-friendly event. The committee has borrowed some gloves and tools from Evergreen and New West Environmental Partners, but volunteers should bring their own gloves and tools if they have them – and a mug, too.

Wright, secretary of the Queensborough Special Programs committee, said this is the ninth year of doing a cleanup along this stretch of the Fraser River in Queensborough. Everyone is invited to come out, rain or shine, to help make a difference.

“We hope to see the whole community come out and make this a huge social event,” she said.

Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. with a group photo being take at 10 a.m. at Thompson Landing Park (on South Dyke Road at Dockside Court). Participants will then make their way to any spot along the river to see what trash they can find, returning at noon to enjoy some snacks and show and tell other folks what they found, before planting gets started at 12:45 p.m.
