There's nothing quite like a dip in a pool to cool you down on a hot summer day.

The summer heat isn’t for everyone. With temperatures expected to rise, we’re serving up a few ways for you to stay cool on hot summer days.

* Take a dip in one of the city’s pools. While the little ones will enjoy playing in the city’s only wading pool in Grimston Park (weather permitting), folks of all ages can enjoy the Hume Park and Moody Park outdoor pools. New Westminster’s most-visited recreation facility, Canada Games Pool, is home to a water slide, diving boards, a hot tub and sauna, fitness area and more. If pools aren’t your scene, local spray parks are a great way to get cooled down. Details on the parks and recreation page at www.newwestcity.ca.

* Lay back and relax in one of the reclining chairs at Landmark Cinemas and watch one of the summer’s flicks. The theatres are at the Shops at New West, 800 Carnarvon St. For show times and other info, go to www.landmarkcinemas.com/showtimes/new-westminster.

* Enjoy an ice cream treat at local restaurants serving up tasty treats.  Annie’s Dairy Bar (722 Sixth St.), Rocky Point Ice Cream (#100 – 500 Sixth Ave.), Dairy Queen (708 Sixth Ave.), and Tre Gallie Gelato Caffe in River Market (810 Quayside Dr.) are some favourites. Menchies in Columbia Square (101 – 1015 Columbia St.) serves up frozen yogurt - and you get to choose what toppings to add.

* Head to one of the local watering holes or restaurants and enjoy a cool drink on the patio. Some local fave patios include: the Paddlewheeler Pub (in River Market), the Boathouse (900 Quayside Dr.), the Hub (in the Shops at New West), El Santo (680 Columbia St.), Piva Modern Italian Restaurant (787 Columbia St. in Anvil Centre), Dublin Castle Pub and Grill (319 Governors Crt.), Kelly O’Bryan’s (800 Columbia St.), and Brown’s Social House (296 East Columbia St.).

* Head indoors and check out local arts, culture and museums at some of the great venues around town. Winds is the current exhibit at the New Media Gallery in Anvil Centre (777 Columbia St.), where you’ll also find the New Westminster Museum and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Not far away is Fraser River Discovery Centre (788 Quayside Dr.)
