Ninety new COVID-19 cases were reported in Island Health — tying the record set just two days earlier — along with one additional death.

Island Health now has 539 active cases. Fifty-four people with COVID-19 have died in the region since the pandemic began.

A total of 820 new cases were reported in B.C. Friday. There are 5,850 known active infections in the province.

Nine additional people have died from the virus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,856.

The Fraser region reported the highest number of new cases at 264, followed by 253 in Interior Health and 112 in Vancouver Coastal Health.

Officials say people who were not fully vaccinated accounted for 78 per cent of the 4,661 cases from Sept. 2 to 8.

They say people who are not vaccinated are 35 times more likely to be hospitalized than those who have had both doses.

They say about 79 per cent of those eligible in B.C. have now received both shots of the COVID-19 vaccine.
