Outgoing West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country MP Pam Goldsmith-Jones has offered a public endorsement of the man who hopes to take her place.

Goldsmith-Jones told Coast Reporter before the Liberals had chosen a candidate for the riding that she would be active in the campaign, but mainly behind the scenes.

“I believe very strongly that I’m passing the torch, that I’m leaving things I feel in strong shape, first of all for the Liberal government, but also for our communities,” Goldsmith-Jones said at the time. “I will certainly support the future MP, but I will be playing a behind-the-scenes role.”

The party nominated 33-year-old Patrick Weiler in late August, and this week he released a video from Goldsmith-Jones offering her “wholehearted support.”

In the one-minute video Goldsmith-Jones noted Weiler’s strong connections to both the West Vancouver and Sunshine Coast parts of the riding, after splitting his time growing up between the two communities.

“His business interests and experience include strong environmental advocacy,” Goldsmith-Jones said. “I know that Patrick has the desire and the ability to represent each and every one of us to make a real difference and to move Canada forward. The choice is clear this October. We can choose a government that will protect the environment, and will build a strong economy.”

Weiler, who officially opened his campaign office on Wharf Avenue in Sechelt on Sept. 15, said via Twitter that he looked forward to building on the progress Goldsmith-Jones achieved during her term as MP.
