Judith Wilson, a lawyer on the lower Sunshine Coast who practises family law, has been acclaimed as the NDP candidate for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country.
In naming the Langdale resident, the NDP is the last major party to pick a candidate for the riding in the Oct. 21 federal election.
According to a release from the riding association, Wilson is “a longtime New Democrat [who] has been active in local politics on the Sunshine Coast since the early eighties when she took a leadership role in fighting against fish farms on the Sechelt Inlet.” Wilson also served as a trustee for School District No. 46.
This is not Wilson’s first foray into federal politics. She was also the NDP candidate for the riding in 2006, when she picked up 20 per cent of the vote in an election that saw then-Liberal Blair Wilson narrowly edge Conservative John Weston for the seat.
“I believe that government’s job is to make life better for all citizens, and that every election is an opportunity to move forward on that goal,” Wilson was quoted in the release. “Today I am proud to be a member of an NDP with an environmental policy that is ‘greener than the greens’ and a plan to get Canadians ‘head to toe’ medical coverage.”
Wilson also said she wants to see the people win an election, not the politicians. And, according to her, that means electing NDP members who won't back down from their promises.
“My commitment is inspired by the lifeworks of Tommy Douglas and Jack Layton and I commit myself if elected to working tirelessly towards the goals the NDP movement represents,” she said.
