Yes, even Santa is video-conferencing in 2020.

Due to ongoing restrictions on gatherings to limit the spread of COVID-19, local retail hub Powell River Town Centre has opted to put a virtual twist on its annual visit from Santa.

This year, Santa will be offering video visits for the children of Powell River, who will get a chance to interact with Santa via his North Pole workshop.

“I’ve been working with my peers in the city, and the number one topic since July has been how are we going to deal with Christmas?” says Lorelei Guthrie, general manager of Powell River Town Centre.

“We realized with the last round of shutdowns that we wouldn’t be able to do the Santa visit in-person. But thankfully, we’ve come up with a great alternative to bring the magic of Christmas into our Powell River families homes.”

Families can sign up for a time slot to have a virtual, interactive visit with Santa. Pricing starts at $24.99 and up, depending on the date and time of the visit.

The Town Centre will be using Jingle Ring, an online virtual hub for Santa visits that is safe, secure and works on any device with an Internet connection.

Powell River Town Centre is also offering its customers another way to interact online with Santa.

Starting on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. and happening every week at the same time leading up to Christmas, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be hosting a story time, reading books live via the Powell River Town Centre Facebook page.

“It’s a different kind of year,” Guthrie says.

“We’ll never forget Christmas 2020 and the process of finding a way to keep the Christmas spirit alive for children. I think it’s critical to have a Santa available to them so that they can see him and have that interaction.”
