Consultation and reconciliation won’t happen by itself, however Lisa Wilcox wants to make the process more approachable for businesses and governments in the Sea to Sky area.

For years Ms. Wilcox has worked with Coast Salish First Nations, helping reach accommodation agreements and impact benefit agreements on projects like the Whistler Blackcomb Master Development Agreement, trans-boundary policy environmental issues, forestry, parks, natural resources, marine and land use tenures.

Through her business, The Engagement Hub, Lisa now operates as an ambassador and consultant – offering her extensive knowledge and 20 years of expertise to industry, private business and government looking to operate on Indigenous territory.

“Approaching consultation and engagement can seem like a daunting, scary thing, but it really is all about creating relationships and understanding. The goal is to bridge that gap in the community. If we can do that, it creates more certainty moving forward,” Wilcox says. “My role is to help guide, government, companies, and First Nations toward meaningful dialogue that creates protection and opportunities within the Sea to Sky community. The history of First Nations within this territory spans 8,000 years creating understanding around that is key.”

Consultation is a legal requirement, but not everyone understands what it “consultation” truly means. Doing it right means taking time to ask lots of questions – and learning what questions to ask.
