Powell River organizations receive city permissive tax exemptions

Six permissive tax exemption bylaws passed by city council

City of Powell River Council has approved permissive tax exemptions to a number of groups and organizations for the 2020 tax year.

The total of the tax exemptions granted is $346,141.77.

At the city council meeting on Thursday, October 17, mayor Dave Formosa said these are organizations that are eligible for having land taxes waived because they are non-profit organizations and meet the criteria for the city’s tax exemption regulations.

Councillor George Doubt said the six permissive tax exemption bylaws being reviewed by council contained lists of organizations getting permissive tax relief.

“It means these non-profit organizations won’t have to go out and raise the additional money to pay city taxes because they do things that are widely believed to be in the interests of all of the taxpayers in the City of Powell River,” said Doubt. “They do amazingly good things.
