New Powell River fitness centre offers a variety of specialty programs and services

A newly launched fitness centre in Powell River aims to fill the gap between acute care programs and mainstream fitness courses.

Thrive Community Fitness, located on Kemano Street, offers various specialty group fitness programs, yoga, nutrition coaching and workshops for people looking to gently enhance their physical activity, cope with chronic conditions or manage chronic pain.

“We’ve partnered with local health and fitness professionals to offer a variety of specialty programs and services to our clients,” Owner Christine Parsons says.

“As a business, we are built on strong core values of integrity, innovation, service excellence and passion and ensure these are built into our programs and services.”

Thrive’s staff include a physiotherapist, respiratory therapist, coaches, and fitness professionals who have a solid health and fitness background.

These programs are especially crucial for the growing population of older adults in Powell River.

“The programs we’re offering are much needed in the community,” Parsons says.

“There are those in the community who don’t feel comfortable going into mainstream fitness programs and looking for a gentle option. They may have ongoing chronic conditions or chronic pain, and mainstream programs may not fit their needs.”

Thrive is offering a small number of programs and services for the winter session and is hoping to expand its offerings come Spring time. Thrive is also open to feedback from the community on current and future programs, Parsons says.

Starting small also ensures classes can be offered safely. Current B.C. COVID-19 guidelines allow low-intensity fitness programs to be offered in the community.

“The health and safety of our participants are of utmost importance,” Parsons says.

Thrive has a thorough COVID-19 safety plan that it takes very seriously.

“Our goal is that people in our community have a place to explore their health and fitness levels where they feel welcome, and they feel like they can have the opportunity to thrive,” Parsons says.

“That’s why I wanted to call the business Thrive. We want everyone in our community to thrive. By providing opportunities to do that, we’re creating a strong and sustainable community.”
