Powell River ferry lineup, 1969
LONG WAIT: Thanksgiving got off to a slow start for people trying to leave Powell River last Friday. This photo, taken just after the departure of the 1 pm ferry to Little River, shows the line of cars that were left behind. Drivers soon abandoned their vehicles to kill time until the 5 pm run. Ferry service did put on an additional ferry at 9 pm, but cars were still left overnight. Some vacationers slept in their cars to hold a spot in the line. Quipped one traveller wryly: “That sign that says ‘Welcome to Powell River’ should have a footnote: ‘Don’t try to leave in a hurry.’” Powell River News archive photo
