Seniors centre on the road to reopening

Frozen entrées, soup and sandwiches offered Tuesdays and Thursdays

Chef Emily McPherson has filled the freezers at Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre with her famous entrées, now available to members for $6 each on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

After a near 10-week full closure, the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre has begun the process of reopening to serve its nearly 1,200 members.

As a first step in that process, society president Chris Kane said: “We have decided the safest and most vital service we can offer at this time is the provision of frozen entrées, as well as soup and sandwiches, through our kitchen facility. Our chef and kitchen manager, Emily McPherson, has a reputation in Sechelt for providing nutritious and tasty entrées at a price that seniors can enjoy, and in a serving size ideal to meet their need.”

At this time, the service is being offered Tuesdays and Thursdays only, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., to members only.

The society hopes to expand the service and offer more of the activities so valuable to the senior population of Sechelt.

“We believe we will be prepared to reopen for pickleball play in mid-June, and soon after, other activities will be returned to our schedule as risk assessments and mitigation measures are clearly defined and met,” Kane added.

“Our members are particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, so our approach has been one of extreme caution. All our volunteers are also seniors, so they are equally vulnerable. This has reduced our capacity to offer some of the services our members have grown to rely upon and enjoy.”

The Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre, located at 5604 Trail Ave., next to the Arts Centre, completed a major renovation and expansion in early 2019. Operated entirely on the strength of its volunteer base and with the support of many local organizations and individuals, the centre receives no direct government funding.
