A 20-year-old woman, described as well  known to police has been arrested after the theft of a courier van Monday morning.

Sunshine Coast RCMP said the van, which was loaded with packages for delivery, was reported stolen from the 5800 block of Marine Way in Sechelt around 8:30 a.m.

RCMP said a couple of “keen-eyed” witnesses were able to help police identify the suspect and while police were patroling the area a report came in of a vehicle matching the description of the stolen van in the Maderia Park area, where it had gone into a ditch off Highway 101.

“Officers attended the collision and located the vehicle as well as a female who matched the suspect description provided by the vehicle owner,” RCMP said in a release.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Sechelt Hospital for treatment of minor injuries from the crash. She’s expected to appear in court soon.

"With prompt assistance from the public, police were able to locate and arrest the woman. The public is instrumental in helping our officers in their duties," said Cst. Jihan McDougall.
