Impaired Driving

• On Oct. 11, a number of witnesses reported a possible impaired driver after the vehicle was seen driving erratically throughout Sechelt, getting involved in at least two hit and runs, and almost hitting a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. The suspect vehicle and out of province driver were located a short time later in downtown Sechelt. Police noted the driver was exhibiting signs of intoxication. The driver was arrested and taken back to the detachment where breath samples confirmed the driver was impaired by alcohol. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition, an administrative driving prohibition, and a promise to appear for court. The file is still under investigation.

• On Oct. 12, police attended a single-vehicle incident on Marine Drive near Marine Crescent, Gibsons, after a vehicle ended up teetering on the edge of a shallow embankment. The driver refused to leave the vehicle for fear of rolling into the ditch until police were able to determine the parking brake would make it safe for the driver to exit the vehicle. The driver, who was exhibiting signs of intoxication by alcohol, was given a roadside alcohol screening test. After two fail results, he was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

• On Oct. 10, a witness reported a possible impaired driver tailgating vehicles and swerving back and forth on the road in the 16500 block of Highway 101, Egmont. Police located the vehicle and spoke with the driver who was determined not to be impaired. The driver was, however, issued a violation ticket for no insurance and his vehicle was towed for safekeeping until valid insurance was arranged.

Hit and Run

• On Oct. 11, police attended a hit and run at the intersection of Wharf Road and Dolphin Street, Sechelt, after the first vehicle was rear-ended by the second vehicle. The second vehicle driver fled the scene without stopping to exchange information with the first vehicle driver. The only description the first vehicle driver was able to obtain was that the suspect vehicle was a loud truck with silver rails on a sled deck. Police are reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses and the file is still under investigation. The suspect vehicle was later found after it was reported in numerous traffic complaints soon after this incident.

• Just after midnight on Oct. 12, a hit and run occurred near the Earls Cove ferry terminal in Egmont. The suspect vehicle, described as a large green truck with large lights on top of the cab, sideswiped the complainant’s vehicle, damaging the driver’s side fender and front wheel, rendering it inoperable. The vehicle sustained moderate to heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to ICBC.

Theft from Vehicle

• Overnight on Oct. 11 and 12, a suspect gained entry to unlocked vehicles parked in the 13200 block of Porters Road, Madeira Park. Nothing was damaged or reported stolen but in both cases, doors to the vehicle were left open by the suspect.

The suspect is seen substituting her own shoes and clothing for new items and leaving the store without paying. The suspect was identified and the file is still under investigation.
