As voters in the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky riding look toward the federal election Oct. 21, The Chief reviewed candidates’ publicly available criminal and traffic court records.
In 2011, Terry Roy Grimwood was named in a criminal harassment case in Sechelt. He agreed to enter a peace bond for one year. A peace bond imposes conditions a person must follow. Conditions a judge can impose include staying away from particular people or places
Grimwood said the charge is from when he tried to help someone who he believed had a mental illness, but who did not want his help.
“I suggested to the court that I would enter into a peace bond for one year to basically step away from the problem. I did that and the peace bond was dismissed,” Grimwood said.
“I was not found guilty of any criminal harassment. It was resolved prior to any trial or court appearance.”
Grimwood is running as an independent candidate.
In May 2004, Liberal Party candidate Patrick Weiler was charged with “care or control of a vehicle or vessel while impaired” and a lesser count of driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention in West Vancouver. He was 18 years old that year. In 2005, Weiler pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. Driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention is not a criminal charge.
He was charged a fine of $600, a $90 victim surcharge, and given a five-month driving prohibition. A victim surcharge is a mandatory 15 per cent of any fine under the Motor Vehicle Act, and does not indicate there was a victim in this incident.
“Fifteen years ago, when I was 18 years old, I paid a fine for a motor vehicle violation. I did something irresponsible that I deeply regret and I faced the consequences. I should not have done it. I have learned from that experience and have never done anything like that again. I am a very different person today, than who I was 15 years ago," Weiler said in an emailed statement.
Also in the public records was a violation ticket for Dana Taylor for speeding in North Vancouver in 2014.
The search found no court records for the NDP’s Judith Wilson, the Conservative’s Gabrielle Loren, the People’s Party Doug Bebb or the Rhino Party’s Gordon Jeffrey.
