A portion of Highway 97 was closed for several hours Wednesday after the driver of a stolen pickup truck struck an ambulance carrying two patients just north of the Simon Fraser Bridge.

Police were called to the scene at 11:15 a.m. where they found the ambulance, the stolen vehicle and another pickup truck that had also been hit. The three had fled the scene on foot but were soon apprehended with the help of a handler and dog.

"Initial investigation has led officers to believe that a stolen pick-up truck was driven through a ditch onto Highway 97 striking the median barricade and then colliding with a southbound ambulance, which then collided with another truck towing a trailer," RCMP said.

Several people suffered injuries, although none appeared to be life threatening.

The stretch was closed well into the evening while evidence was gathered. The BC RCMP's Impaired Driving Unit is assisting with the investigation.

Names of the suspects were not released and charges remain pending.
