CALGARY – In their final home game of the Canada West regular season, the University of Calgary Dinos used a pair of first-half goals to defeat the UNBC Timberwolves 2-1 for the second consecutive day at Dinosaur Field.
Coming off a 2-0 win on Saturday afternoon, the Dinos got goals from Amy Mikuska and Kelsie MacDonald before surrendering a tally in the second half to Sofia Jones.
The Dinos will head into the final weekend of play with a 10-0-2 record while the Timberwolves fall to 3-5-4.
The home team collected the first goal of the match in the 18th minute with a long-distance shot. Mikuska unleashed one of her signature attempts from roughly 40 yards out and scored her fourth goal of the season.
“Amy’s deliverance is always brilliant,” praised Dinos assistant coach Glenn Ramsay. “It was a matter of inches and a crossbar that prevented her from scoring two or three today.”
Less than 10 minutes later, Calgary struck again. MacDonald cut in from the right side, the opposite from her usual left-wing position, and made no mistake putting a low strike with her left foot past UNBC goalkeeper Madi Doyle.
The Timberwolves would not respond until the second half as they took advantage of a scramble in front of the Calgary net. Coming off a corner kick in the 55th minute, Jones got the final touch before the ball reached the goal line. The Dinos argued the ball never crossed the line, but the goal stood, making it 2-1.
After the UNBC goal, the Dinos regained their composure and led the possession time in the second half while holding their opponent without a shot for the rest of the afternoon.
Dinos goalkeeper Lauren Houghton started the match before giving way to rookie Courtney Doubleday in the final 45 minutes for her Canada West debut. Madi Doyle made nine saves in the UNBC net.
The T-wolves (fifth in Pacific) wrap up the regular season with games Friday in Victoria and Saturday at UBC in Vancouver. The top six teams in each division advance to the playoffs.
