Pendrel of Kamloops places 18th in fourth Olympics, six months after giving birth

Catharine Pendrel, who gave birth in January, placed 18th in the women’s cross country mountain biking event on Tuesday in Tokyo at the postponed 2020 Olympic Summer Games.

The 40-year-old Kamloops resident finished eight minutes and one second behind gold-medallist Jolanda Neff, who topped the all-Swiss podium.

Sina Frei and Linda Indergand of Switzerland placed second and third, respectively.

Pendrel has competed in four World Cup events this season and has not earned a top-20 finish, so her performance on Tuesday in her fourth Olympic Games exceeded expectations.

She was the top Canadian, finishing 11 spots ahead of Haley Smith of Uxbridge, Ont.

Pendrel hovered around 20th place and 21st place for much of the race, but made a charge in the final two laps and held on for the top-20 finish.
