Slog through rain: Save the children

More than 700 Powell River youngsters walked an eight-mile circle in the rain Sunday to raise money for Save the Children Fund.

Money raised for the 50th anniversary of fund will be used for children’s projects in 28 countries.

Mrs. Edith Jones, Save the Children Fund local representative, said that except for weather, organizers were very pleased with walk. The exact amount raised won’t be known until children have collected from their sponsors. It is hoped all money will be turned in by the end of the month.

Children started walking from closest school and walked an eight-mile circle taking in J. P. Dallos, Edgehill, Cranberry Lake and Henderson schools.

Mrs. Jones said very few youngsters failed to complete the walk.

The youngest walkers were four-year-old Laverna Phillips and her five-year-old sister Flora, who walked with an older sister. They walked four and one-half miles from Cranberry Lake school to J. P. Dallos.

Fastest walkers were Jeff Sauve, Keith Abbott, Drew Ferguson and David Zroback. They started from J. P. Dallos and returned in one hour, 20 minutes.

Most walkers took about two and one-half hours. A number of parents walked with the children.

Two boys walked from J. P. Dallos to Cranberry Lake, stopped to play a soccer game and then completed walk.
