Villa eyes first place

Powell River Villa soccer club beat Victoria West Beavers 3-0 in Vancouver Island Soccer League Division 3A action on February 3. The win puts Villa into a three-way tie for first place with Victoria’s Gorge and Bays United, each with 40 points.
The final game of the season on Saturday, February 10, between Villa and Gorge will decide first place. With a one-goal lead in goal differential, a win or a tie will give Villa the title and be enough to move the club up to Division 2. Gorge has handed Villa its only two losses this season. Villa has the home-field advantage and a strong lineup, including young attacking forwards Chris Fisher, James Timothy and Cullen Buholzer. Game time is 1:30 pm at Timberlane Park.

Soccer masters win cup

Powell River’s Scott Fisher and Tony Leach joined North Vancouver’s Seymour FC senior men’s soccer team recently to compete in the King Cup, a master’s soccer tournament recently held in Las Vegas.
The team won all six of its games en route to taking the championship on penalty shots. Seymour FC scored a total of 14 goals over the course of the tournament and Fisher and Leach scored five apiece. Last year, the pair won gold medals at the 2017 World Masters Games in New Zealand.
