WorkBC Centre Powell River helps employees/employers adapt to ‘new normal’

Job activity increases in region

WorkBC Centre Powell River, formerly known as Career Link, has been helping community members find employment in Powell River and surrounding areas since 1984.

COVID-19 has deeply impacted the local economy, resulting in a 58 per cent decrease in job postings from spring 2019 to 2020, and fewer individuals seeking work, according to local WorkBC Centre manager Brodie D’Angio.

“On the up side, activity at the centre has increased in the past few weeks with more postings from employers, and more job seekers,” says D’Angio. “There’s still uncertainty, but people are starting to get curious about what future employment might look like for them.”

WorkBC Centre Powell River plays a role in the region’s economy, offering job posting and funding opportunities for employers, and supporting job seekers with employment services. Some of those services include resumé and cover letter development, career exploration, interview skills and insights into the local job market.

One of the services currently garnering a lot of interest is skills training.

“Job seekers are reflecting on their current skills and considering how they might fit into the future ‘new normal’ job market,” says D’Angio. “Those who are interested in exploring retraining options should contact WorkBC to discuss eligibility.”

To enhance options for clients, WorkBC has reexamined ways to host client appointments, offering telephone and video meetings to ensure continuity of service to the community when in-office appointments are not possible.

“The pandemic has created a unique opportunity for us to be more creative and flexible with our services,” explains D’Angio. “We plan to continue offering and optimizing video and telephone options to provide accessible and safe options to the community.”

WorkBC Centre Powell River is keeping clients and staff safe by following a comprehensive COVID-19 Safety Plan, which includes a number of preventative measures including a hand-sanitizing station, a plexi-glass partition at the front desk, and regular cleaning of high contact surfaces, to name a few. WorkBC also asks all clients and staff who are experiencing cold and flu-like symptoms to please stay home.

“By doing our part now, we are helping to protect the most vulnerable residents in our community and reduce the strain on our health-care system,” says D’Angio.
