I fully agree with Mr. Francescutti’s statements regarding the old incinerator site, and that it should be kept as parkland [“Resident opposes location of new Powell River resource-recovery centre,” October 18].
I find it incredulous that the qathet Regional District would use that land as a resource-recovery centre, with heavy traffic going past a children’s playground, public beach and tourist campsite. Not to mention, increased traffic along Marine Avenue, which is bad enough when the ferry is unloading, to turn left or right from Aberni Street onto Marine.
As it is, Powell River is losing so much greenspace due to construction of new housing developments that it seems shortsighted not to make better use of that site.
It could be used to educate/enhance tourist appreciation and enjoyment of our city. For example: a Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society centre, or a centre with history of indigenous people, the pulp and paper mill, et cetera.
How about a beer garden, laser tag, go-kart racing?
Keeping it green would be more beneficial to the environment and help offset climate change.
I don’t believe it is too late to question/change plans for that site. Look how long it took for the new liquid waste treatment plant to be decided on; and still no construction yet.
