Letter: Herbicides are harmful

Powell River letter

I am very worried about the spraying of herbicides on the brush in the qathet Regional District region [“qathet Regional District reacts to herbicide/pesticide application,” June 4].

Herbicides are dangerous additions to the water in streams and creeks. Many bears are being shot when they come to town looking for food. Herbicides will further eliminate plants with berries as a food source for our wild animals.

Herbicides are harmful to the bees, which pollinate our human food plants. While I am glad we have jobs in forestry and that Western Forest Products is working in our community,  vegetation diversity is important for clean water storage and filtration, for slowing wildfires and for preventing erosion.

Tourists delight in the plant diversity of our beautiful coastal environment. I humbly request a reassessment of the decision to eliminate our lovely native plants.
