qathet Regional District (qRD) has received level two recognition for its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

According to a media release on Thursday, September 19, the regional district has completed a corporate carbon inventory and demonstrated familiarity with the regional district’s energy consumption and emissions. The recognition and level attained is acknowledged annually by the joint provincial – Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Green Communities Committee to local governments that demonstrate progress on their climate action charter commitments. As a signatory to the BC Climate Action Charter, qRD is working with the province and UBCM to take action on climate change and reduce GHG emissions region-wide.

Projects that assisted qRD in achieving level two recognition include:

• Identifying climate change as a priority in the strategic plan

• Developing a corporate GHG reduction strategy

• Setting GHG reduction targets and incorporating climate change mitigation and adaptations into qRD official community plans

• Incorporating climate change into the asset management program and capital project planning

“Mitigating climate change effects in our community will help the regional district’s resiliency and will bring awareness to the economic effects of climate change,” said regional district chair Patrick Brabazon. “Recognition for measuring GHG emissions supports the board’s priorities of proactive planning and action to reduce the impacts of climate change and enhance environmental sustainability within the regional district.”
