Powell River Fire Rescue attended the scene of an early morning fire in the Wildwood neighbourhood on Wednesday, May 29.

A witness reported that a house at the corner of Joncas Place and Highway 101 was fully engulfed in flames at 6:25 am and that an ambulance and three fire trucks were on scene.

Fire chief Terry Peters said the structure was fully involved in flame when Powell River Fire Rescue arrived. The residents were able to safely leave the burning structure.

“Immediately, we did a defensive attack and we moved into offensive, which is what we are doing now,” said Peters, around 8:30 am. “We are mopping up hot spots.

“It’s been very stubborn. The fire has got into the attic. We have to cut into the sides of the building. We are just getting it under control now.”

Peters said at this time the fire department could not assume anything about the cause of the fire.

“We still have to talk with the residents and the owner and the neighbours about what they saw and did,” said Peters. “We’ll start our investigation probably later on this afternoon.”

Peters said the residence was a rental home.
