The real estate market can be scary. The economy can feel like it is constantly in a state of flux and for first time buyers in particular it can feel particularly daunting to take that first step onto the property ladder.

But that’s where a good realtor can help.

Kat Gullette, a local real estate professional with Royal Lepage and long-term resident of Powell River, is an expert at helping first time buyers to find their dream homes.

So we asked her for some of her top tips for first time buyers, so that novices can forget the uncertainty and get excited again about buying their first property.

Understand what you are looking for

How do you know what you are looking for if you do not know what you want? Searching for your first home will be a lot easier if you have some idea of what you want from it.

But keep an open mind

It is very rare for your first home to tick every box that you are looking for. But that does not mean that you cannot find a home that you will fall in love with.

Ask questions

No one is expecting you to be a real estate expert right off of the bat, so make sure you ask as many questions as you can. A good realtor is not only there to help guide you through the process, but to help you understand how it works.

Know your budget

In today’s market you will probably find yourself in a situation where you are competing against multiple offers to secure your first home. It is vital then that you have your finances in order and your mortgage pre-approved if possible.

Find a great realtor

Buying your first home is a big deal, after all this is probably going to be the most expensive thing you have ever bought. It is vital then that you work with someone you trust, someone who will be in your corner every step of the way. That is where a great realtor comes in.
