Should you cut your hair during the pandemic? How about colouring?

Some would say to embrace the growth, document it even. Take current photos of hair/beards and plan to photograph the unruly mane again before heading back to your favourite shop for a tidy, as soon as salons and barbershops open again.

People are taking out the scissors and deciding to do it themselves. Why not? We aren’t going anywhere. It’s hair; it grows back, right?

Provincial health officer Bonnie Henry joked during a media session on April 7 that she did some work on her own hair, and assured the public that she did not visit a salon. What choice does she, or we, have right now?

Is this not the perfect time to test out your skills, or lack thereof? Bangs, sure, buzz cut, not intentional, but okay.

What about those pesky greys or roots we have been able to hide so well for so long? Well, that is a bit more controversial.

Experts are reaching out to clients to beg them not to use box colour during this time. Afterglow Hair Lounge recently posted this plea to customers to Instagram: “As tempting as box colouring your hair may be right now, please keep in mind that you likely won’t achieve your desired results. This could result in a colour correction costing hundreds of dollars and irreversible damage to your hair.”

While they cannot offer services, most salons in Powell River are offering styling tips, product discounts and deliveries to keep everyone looking their best during this time, should they choose to. We would recommend using them; you never know when a Zoom invite might show up from work.

A lot of resources are out there when googling DIY haircuts, trending even. Pinterest, stylists, Instagram stories, YouTube, and more. Even if you don’t plan to give this a try, do yourself a favour, do a search and gain some inspiration or have a good laugh.
