First Credit Union and Powell River Public Library will be unveiling a new public art installation called Bear Island on Friday, April 3.

The art installation, located in the First Credit Union Community Room at the library, is a graphic mural adapted from the original work by Powell River-based artist Anna May Bennett.

The mural was gifted to the library from First Credit Union.

“Our commitment to building financially healthy, thriving communities is what inspired First Credit Union to gift this mural installation to the Powell River Public Library,” stated First Credit Union community relations specialist Caitlin Bryant in a media release. “Many of the users of the First Credit Union Community Room are not-for-profit organizations doing important community work or community members attending various informational seminars and workshops.”

The art installation was met with appreciation from the library, according to the release.

“We see the value that local arts and culture bring to our communities and public spaces,” stated chief librarian Rebecca Burbank. “It’s exciting to share Anna May Bennett’s Bear Island with the users of this space.”

Readers can join First Credit Union, Powell River Public Library and Bennett for a community celebration and unveiling from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, April 3, at the library, 6975 Alberni Street. Light refreshments will be served along with brief remarks from Bennett, as well as First Credit Union and library representatives.
