50s and 60s music revue schedules show in Powell River

Relive the Music comes to town November 16

Steve Marshall is bringing a new musical revue to Powell River, and he has a message for people in the city.

“You’d better not miss the show, because you’re going to hear about it from your neighbours for the next 10 years,” he said.

Relive the Music 50’s & 60’s has been selling out shows across BC since the beginning of 2019.

“I’ve been performing and producing shows for the last 40 years,” said Marshall, “and I have never seen the kind of reaction people have to this show. We’re getting standing ovations every night.”

Marshall has been a musician for a long time, and has learned a lot about what makes some music popular.

“The music of the 50s and 60s has lasting power,” he said. “It was really hard to take 20 years of great music and cut it down to a two-hour show. It was like trying to cut my babies.”

Marshall has wanted to do this type of show for almost two decades, but something was always holding him back.

“Finally, in late 2018, I said to myself that if the three big theatres on Vancouver Island were open on certain dates, I would do the show,” he said. “Well, they were, so I had to get started. My family thought I was crazy at first, but then we started selling some tickets, and they started to help me get it together.”

In addition to creating the show, Marshall is the drummer in the five-piece band. His daughter Kimi plays guitar, and his wife Luisa, daughter Zenia and his sister-in-law Tota Mendez are three of the six singers.

“It really is a family affair,” he said.

Marshall decided to focus on the music of the 1950s and 1960s because he felt that those decades have been ignored by modern revue shows.

“There are lots of shows about the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but not very many about this music,” he said. “I’m a baby boomer myself, and so I wanted to create a show for people like me, with the music we grew up with, but it really is a family affair. You might just realize that your grandmother is really cool.”

In addition to singers and a band, the show features two dancers and an announcer to introduce the songs.

“We start each song with a little bit of trivia,” said Marshall. “We don’t name the artist or song, but we say a little bit about it and then get the audience to try and guess the song. For example, we play a song by an artist who went to England and was backed up by the Beatles. Well, he forgot his glasses on the plane, so he had to wear his prescription sunglasses for interviews, and that became his look. Want to know who that is? Come to the show and find out.”

Relive the Music 50’s & 60’s will be at the Evergreen Theatre on Saturday, November 16. Tickets are available at the reception desk at Powell River Recreation Complex, online at BrownPaperTickets.com, or by phone at 1.800.838.3006.
