Powell River Kings travelled to Trail for their first road game of the young BC Hockey League season to face the Smoke Eaters on Wednesday, September 18.

After a scoreless first period, Reilly Moran scored his third goal of the season to break the deadlock. The teams combined for six goals in the third period, including four for the visiting Kings.

Hunter McCoy scored just six seconds into the final frame, followed 57 seconds later by the eventual winner off the stick of Dawson McKay, the forward’s fourth goal in five games.

Michael Abgrall and Rowan Miller added insurance goals to close out a 5-2 win.

“It was our first road game and we had some bumps," said Kings assistant coach Brock Sawyer. "We bent but we didn’t break."

Matteo Paler-Chow turned aside 38 of the 40 shots he faced in front of 1,582 fans at Cominco Arena. The Powell River goaltender’s performance earned first-star honours for the game.

Jack Brackett assisted on two goals and earned second star recognition added of Trail’s Tyler Ghirardosi, the game’s third star.

“I thought we were good, our D limited their speed," added Sawyer. "We told the guys in the pre-scout that we need to hunt pucks, and be hungry. That comes with moving your feet and once we did that we forced turnovers and capitalized on our opportunities."

Kings’ next four games take place on the road, beginning in Salmon Arm on Friday, September 20, followed by stops in Vernon the following evening, and then Victoria and Nanaimo on September 28 and 29. Kings will also play Victoria (October 2) and Langley (October 3) at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack, and visit Nanaimo and Victoria on October 5 and 6, before their next game at Hap Parker Arena against Penticton on October 11.
