Powell River’s recreation facilities are gearing up again.

At the September 3 city council meeting, councillor Jim Palm said he had met with director of parks, recreation and culture Ray Boogaards, who provided a quick update on what’s happening with the department.

Palm said in terms of the Powell River Recreation Complex ice surface, when Palm met with Boogaards, the ice was just being put in.

“I’m happy to report that the minor hockey association will be utilizing that ice surface starting September 14,” said Palm. “That’s good news and residents are very happy that is underway.

“The reason we can do that, just so the public is aware, is minor hockey pays a good fee to use that ice surface and is paying for us to break even in terms of what it costs the city to operate.”

Palm said he had received questions regarding the swimming pool. He said it is hoped the facility will reopen on November 1.

“What transpired there is with the revamp and upgrade of the pool facility, they found a couple of deficiencies when they were regrouting and taking a good look around,” said Palm. “They are doing extra work to make that safer and operating at better capacity in terms of circulating the water through that facility. That’s the reason it’s taking so long, just so the public is aware.”

Palm said in terms of programming, it will be starting sometime in September.

“An exact date has not been set,” said Palm, “but it will be coming forward.”
