Novel Mushroom Discoveries

Malaspina Naturalists Club presents local Jason Leane, Citizen Science and the Discovery of Novel Mushroom Species at 7:30 pm Thursday, February 21, at Trinity Hall, United Church. Leane has come up with a system of “barcoding” the genes of local species and has found some that might be misclassified, wildly misnamed or suspiciously far from their natural habitat. Local author Cindy Babyn presents a workshop mapping out the nitty gritty of publishing in Canada. This workshop will provide insight into publishing contracts, book design, editing, self-publishing, eBooks and marketing. ORCA Bus

On the Road with Children’s Activities (ORCA) Bus provides early-childhood fun and learning from 9:30 to 11:30 am, Monday, February 25, at James Thomson Elementary School. StrongStart, an outreach program for School District 47, will be on board. ORCA Bus programs are play-based but also offer the opportunity for parents to network and share thoughts and ideas on parenting. Powell River Garden Club presents Fundamentals of Landscape Design by Tracey Loslo, 7 pm Tuesday, February 26, at the Cranberry Seniors’ Centre at the corner of Manson Avenue and Cranberry Street. Whether you're a DIY'er or looking to contact a professional landscape designer, you'll appreciate the topic. Everyone welcome. Come for an enjoyable evening with interesting garden information, tea/coffee and goodies. The garden club meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month January to June and September to November.

Saturday, February 23

Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts opens for the 75th time with piano sessions at 9:30 am, 1 pm and 7 pm Saturday, February 23, at James Hall, Powell River Academy of Music. These sessions are open to the public. There is no charge of entry however donations are welcome. A workshop is scheduled for Sunday morning, February 24.

Monday, February 25

Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts continues with three sessions for band and instrumental, which begin at 1 pm followed by an evening session at 7 pm Monday, February 25, at Max Cameron Theatre. The third session starts at 9:30 am on Tuesday, February 26. There is no charge for entry however donations are welcome.

Powell River Farmers’ Agricultural Institute invites everyone to a Raise the Roof dinner with VIU Culinary Arts students, 6 to 9 pm Wednesday, March 6, at Brooks Secondary School Great Hall. Tickets for PRFAI members $10, non-members $25 at Top Shelf Feeds or email fireweedjazz@gmail.com. Funds raised will be used to replace the Quonset hut at the Exhibition Grounds.

Community Foundation

Community Health

Concert Band

Powell River Community Concert Band, directed by Roy Carson, meets 7:30 to 9 pm Thursdays in the Brooks Secondary School band room, 5400 Marine Avenue. Cranberry Community Hall Association

Cranberry Hall provides an affordable, versatile space for meetings and events at 6828 Cranberry Street. A song circle takes place on the second Sunday of each month and an acoustic coffeehouse takes place on the last Sunday by donation. Powell River Public Library

Powell River Public Library hosts free board game nights from 5 to 8 pm every Wednesday and Friday at the library, 100-6975 Alberni Street. Open to all ages. Powell River Amateur Radio Club and Powell River Amateur Repeater Society meet at 7 pm on the second Wednesday of each month at Westview Flying Club. Reach to Recovery

Reach to Recovery provides hospital and home visits to recently diagnosed breast cancer patients. Service offers one-on-one counselling with trained counsellors for anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and provides information. Rotary Club of Powell River

Salvation Army

StrongStart

StrongStart early learning programs are available for children birth to pre-kindergarten at Kelly Creek Community School, James Thomson, Henderson and Westview elementary schools, and on the ORCA Bus. Scottish Country Dancing

Options for Sexual Health drop-in clinic will open from 5 to 7 pm on the first and third Thursday of each month at Powell River General Hospital, 5000 Joyce Avenue. Access low-cost birth control, counselling, health screening, pap tests and more.

St. Joseph's Hall hosts a soup kitchen from 12 to 1 pm every Friday. The hall is adjacent to Assumption Church on Glacier Street.

 

Sunshine Coast Cloggers

Sunshine Coast Cloggers meet at 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Wednesday evenings at Powell River Christian School.

 

Sunshine Speakers

Therapeutic Riding Association provides opportunities for volunteers to enjoy fresh air, exercise and guaranteed big smiles, 45 minutes a day or more, Monday to Thursday at Paradise Valley Exhibition Grounds.
