LSS team named tourney champions

On Jan 12, the LSS Wildfire Wrestling team travelled to Prince George to compete in the 38th Kelly Road Open. This was the first year that LSS grapplers have attended the event, which brings in high school wrestlers from across the north of B.C. for an intense day of freestyle competition.

A total of 25 athletes from LSS attended the event, most having no prior competition experience.

What the team lacked in experience, they made up for in determination and technique, bringing home an impressive medal count.

At day’s end, athletes were thrilled at the announcement that Lillooet had scored the most team points, earning them the title of tournament champions. Coaches were thrilled at the growth and teamwork displayed, especially by our rookie athletes.

The success in Prince George marks a big step forward for the third-year program that is quickly earning respect at the provincial level.

Looking ahead, the Wildfire will be looking to improve on last year’s 5th place finish at the Western Canada Age Class in Abbotsford Jan 24-27.

The team is also very excited to be hosting the 2019 Okanagan Zone Championships at Lillooet Secondary on Feb 9. The team is hoping a big crowd will turn out for the event to enjoy some intense wrestling action.
