On Sept. 20, a handful of entrepreneurs under the age of 40 will have a chance to pitch their social business ideas to a panel of judges for a chance to win $5,000.

The contest is being organized by an internal group within the Sunshine Coast Credit Union (SCCU) called the Venture Young Leader Team, aimed at supporting young business leaders on the Sunshine Coast.

“We wanted a way to support other young leaders in the community,” said Melissa Enyedy, who is part of the team.

While the public is welcome to attend the free event at Persphone Brewing Company, the nominees have already been chosen. The bank invited people under the age of 40 to apply, and of the approximately 13 who did, eight were selected. Among the criteria was the requirement that elements of their pitches align with the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Miranda Beall, also part of the young leader team, said social impact is a “critical part of our SCCU mission,” and the contest is expected to help the bank spread that message to the business community. The bank is also hoping the event will be a networking opportunity, with live music, food vendors and door prizes.

Representatives from local businesses, the SCCU and Community Futures Sunshine Coast will be judging the pitches.

SCCU plans to release the names of the nominees next week on social media. Doors for the event open at 5 p.m. and pitches start at 6.
