For the past few weeks I’ve submitted several articles about the wonderful game of curling here on the Sunshine Coast. The Gibsons Curling Club is located right on Gibsons Way as you come into Gibsons. It’s the building on the right side as you approach Sunnycrest Mall, the one with the big curler mural on the side of the building.

If you’ve been reading my articles, you’ve learned just a bit more about the history of the game, the physicality that it takes to play the game at an elite level, yet the fun there is to be had at the local club level. It’s a game that anyone can play, literally for their entire life. This final article is one of invitation. We want you to come and see the game of curling for yourself. You can even come out onto the ice and see what it feels like to throw a rock if you’d like.

Saturday, Feb. 22 is National Curling Day, and we’re celebrating it by welcoming you into our Gibsons Curling Club. Bring a friend. You know you want to see this unique game up close and personal. Now is your chance.

The Gibsons Curling Club has a licensed lounge upstairs with a generous viewing area to see the ice and the games. So, you can come and watch, or you can even try throwing a rock or two. There’ll be games on the ice from 12:30 to 4 p.m. You may recall one of my feature articles about our Special Olympics curlers – well, you’ll even be able to see them in action too.

And finally, at 2 p.m. there’ll be a most unique and entertaining game of curling. Even seasoned curlers like to come and watch this one. We’ll be having a Survivor Curling Game right here in the Gibsons Curling Club. Sixteen curlers start the game, and at the conclusion of each end of the game, someone gets voted off the ice by the other curlers. It’s a brutal, entertaining afternoon for both curlers and observers. And the winner takes home $160 in prize money.

In short, Sunshine Coast readers, if these articles about curling over the past few weeks have caught your attention, you are more than welcome to come on in to watch and participate. You’ll never know until you try, so come experience the wonderful game of curling.
