Art Beat: Capernaum is ‘unforgettable’

The Sunshine Coast Film Society is presenting the “searing, unforgettable film” Capernaum on Monday, Sept. 23 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons.

The Sunshine Coast Film Society is presenting the “searing, unforgettable film” Capernaum on Monday, Sept. 23 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, Capernaum tells the story of a man in Beirut, following him from his deprived childhood to criminal adulthood. His despair reaches the point that he sues his parents for giving him life. Directed by filmmaker Nadine Labaki, “its flashes of humour and human relationships will warm and break your heart at the same time.” Starts at 7:30 p.m.

Pender Music

There’s some great musical entertainment at the north end of the peninsula on Sunday, Sept. 22. The Pender Harbour Music Society’s 2019-20 season starts with the jazz/world/pop covers and originals of Mimosa, featuring masterful local players Anna Lumiere and Karen Graves and their Vancouver band members, Rebecca Shoichet, James Meger and Bernie Arai. From 2 to 4 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music. Tickets are $25.

The Sunday afternoon jams once hosted by the Garden Bay Pub have moved to the restaurant at the Pender Harbour Golf Club, at 13823 Sunshine Coast Hwy. The All-Star Roots and Blues Jam features the Steve Hinton Band, Joe Stanton, Simon Paradis, Peter Van Trio, and Jim Foster, from 2 to 6 p.m. By donation.

Crystal Journey

A unique and deeply relaxing musical experience will be featured at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Saturday, Sept. 21. David Hickey will perform Crystal Journey with crystal bowls, gongs, dulcimers and other exotic instruments. Count on an evening of soothing, meditative and healing music. Bring a yoga mat, blanket or cushion if you’d like to lie down, but chairs will be provided, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door. Proceeds will go to Sunday in the Park with Pride Society.

Edge of the Knife

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council’s monthly Sunday Film Series is back on Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. with a screening of Sgaaway K’uuna (Edge of the Knife). “Part drama, part historical reclamation, this film charts a simple narrative about a reckless uncle who can’t bear the guilt of having led his nephew to his demise.”

Told entirely in the Haida language, with English subtitles. At the Arts Centre in Sechelt, 5714 Medusa St., $10 admission.

Lu’au

Coast musical maestro Nikki Weber is warming up the cooling season with a Hawaiian Lu’au Dinner Gala on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Sechelt Legion. Doors at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., then at 7:30 p.m., it’s showtime with Nikki’s Uke Madness followed by Dhyana Bartkow’s traditional Hawaiian Hula dancers, Keia Papa Kaua. By advance ticket only, $45, available at Strait Music in Sechelt, Blackberry Shop in Gibsons, and from Nikki at 604-740-0933.

Songs from the Bamboo Forest

The music duo Bushido, made up of Japanese flautist and multi-instrumentalist Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos, of Madeira Park, and North Vancouver taiko drummer and sanshin (three-string guitar) player Nori Akagi, will take the stage at Roberts Creek Hall on Sunday, Sept. 22. They will perform new arrangements of traditional Japanese folk songs and some originals, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at www.eventbrite.ca.

Heritage Playhouse

Gibsons actor and writer Lucas Foss presents his celebrated one-man play Little Voices at the Heritage Playhouse on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21, 7 to 9 p.m. See our feature story on page 41.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m., also at the Playhouse, Off the Page launches its 2019-20 season with a spirited reading-performance of Dorothy Dittrich’s Lesser Demons. The cast includes Dave Hurtubise, Varya Rubin, Bob Frazer, Patrick Visser, Sally Williams, Heidi Riggs, Wanda Nowicki, Louise Phillips, and Janet Hodgkinson. Playwright Dittrich will be on hand for audience questions after the performance. Admission by donation.

At the pubs

Baby Harry Kings of Soul are at the Roberts Creek Legion on Friday, Sept. 20, from 9 to 11:30 p.m.

Singer-songwriter Jess Hart plays at 2 p.m. Saturday at Persephone Brewing in Gibsons.

The duo version of The Burying Ground takes their fiery, upbeat blues, country and vintage jazz to the Backeddy Resort and Marina in Egmont on Saturday, Sept. 21, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Beach rock/reggae veteran Daniel Wesley plays tunes from his newly released EP at The Brewhouse in Gibsons on Saturday night, 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets $30.
