Arbutus Sounds Chorus concludes its season with weekend shows on Dec. 14 and 15.

Christmas time with Arbutus Sounds Chorus is filled with the joy of sharing our music with so many in our community. As an a cappella group we sing without accompaniment and as such our group is very portable. We begin our sing-outs early in December at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse with the local Coast Cable Telethon, joining with other community performers to help raise money for many needy charities on the Sunshine Coast.

Two of our most rewarding days are spent at the seniors’ homes and extended care facilities in both Gibsons and Sechelt. The residents of these care homes will sometimes surprise the staff by responding to the Christmas carols and maybe sing along or nod or tap to the songs from years past. We move from floor to floor to sing for as many residents as possible. What a thrill to know we have brightened their day just a little. We always come away from this day feeling thankful for the power of music, especially Christmas music, buried deep within every one of us.

An afternoon or two at Trail Bay Centre in Sechelt is our chance to connect with children and families out shopping and visiting Santa. We feel like wandering minstrels as we go from one end of the mall to the other and sing our most popular holiday songs with lots of jingle bells, a little drum and big smiles in our Santa hats and reindeer antlers.

Then our shows! After a busy sing-out schedule, we conclude our season with a very special weekend.

With the help of our very talented scriptwriters and special guests we will weave our favourite songs around “Treasured Memories and Traditions of Christmas” with personal stories of Christmas past from around the world contributed by our own members. These shows bring together our families and friends who support us throughout the year. We are always so proud to showcase our hard work and dedication to musical harmony and the love and friendship we enjoy as members of Arbutus Sounds Chorus.

Please join us on either Saturday, Dec. 14, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at St. John’s United Church in Davis Bay or Sunday, Dec. 15 in Gibsons at the Calvary Baptist Church, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Admission is by donation and please come early as seating is limited.
