Ferries CEO unconvincing

Re: “BC Ferries says travellers ‘may not be telling the truth’ about resident status,” July 24.

BC Ferries has little trouble verifying that passengers have a valid reservation or TAP form. Not that the latter assures guaranteed loading: an absolute travesty! As well, I always have to show proof of age to get my weekday discount. Alas, the ferry CEO tells us that “BC Ferries is not an enforcement agency” when it comes to verifying residency in order to conform to a provincial order to give residents priority boarding. I guess if there is no revenue in it, BC Ferries just doesn’t care; ministerial order be damned.

Our provincial government suspended tolls on the Port Mann Bridge for vote-rich Surrey, etc. But they have done absolutely nothing to address the Coast’s nightmare transportation link. Last Saturday afternoon it took us five hours to get from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale. As we were sitting in our car, outside of the gate, roasting in the heat and without access to any amenities, I couldn’t help thinking that this had much in common with a Third World border crossing. And yes, I have had that experience. We need a bridge!
