A simple sticker will do

In last week’s story about travellers seeking priority boarding on the ferries, Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons called the honour system for reporting residency “terrible.”

BC Ferries CEO Mark Collins said checking everyone’s ID would be time consuming and cause “uncontrollable waits.” He needs to think outside the box. There’s a simple, inexpensive way to solve this problem. A sticker tacked onto windshields would be almost immediately recognizable and cause no waits.

I contacted Sticker Canada and asked for an estimate for colour, in-the-window, vinyl stickers with a Sunshine Coast Regional District logo and the words “I’m a resident of the Sunshine Coast.”

The company’s customer service desk quoted $1,089 for 20,000 two-inch-square stickers. That’s five cents per sticker.

BC Ferries should order the stickers as a gesture of good will and send them to the SCRD office. Alternately, insurance offices could distribute the stickers to residents who buy car insurance. I’m sure Coasters would be happy to pay $5 each and see the proceeds – which could amount to as much as $100,000 – go to charity.

This would go a long way toward improving BC Ferries’ reputation on the Sunshine Coast.
