This letter was sent to Member of Parliament Patrick Weiler and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

I write to urgently request that you do all in your power to have Canada sign and ratify the United Nations Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty. The treaty came into effect on Jan. 22 after the required 50th state ratified it by an official government vote.

“In total,” The Canadian Press Reported, “122 of the 193 member states in the UN General Assembly have endorsed the treaty, of which 86 are signatories – but not Canada.” Why?

There is no greater threat to the world environment than nuclear weapons, which could in a few minutes wipe out life on the planet at we know it. Nuclear submarines, each of which can carry nuclear armaments with a destructive power equivalent to 1200 Hiroshimas, frequently visit the Nanoose Bay facility and test their torpedoes a scarce 15 kilometres from Sechelt.

These nuclear submarines have one aim: to threaten the destruction of whole cities, incinerating every man, woman and child in them. There is no greater terrorist threat anywhere.

To protect the future of all the world’s children, will you please stand up and support all the smaller nations which have shown the courage to sign this treaty?
