Rest in peace, son

I would like to take this very sad time to thank this wonderful Sunshine Coast community for all the help that we received during our terrible time of need. I moved to this community 50 years ago and it seems like it was the best decision I have made in my lifetime.

On Aug. 19 my son Jesse entered the water at Roberts Creek on a fun kayak trip. He would never return. We didn’t know that he was missing until 36 long hours had passed. We received help from everybody. We set up a search from our home here in Gibsons immediately upon realizing the situation, but we were too late. Above and beyond the Coast Guard, RCMP, Search and Rescue, Airspan helicopter service, two Zodiacs, fixed-wing planes, Seadoos, kayaks and numerous friends in pleasure crafts, I truly want to thank my family. We pulled together very quickly and effectively. Everybody acted as if we had done this a thousand times. But it was all new to us.

I am so proud of my family for focusing on our mission, which resulted in us finding him on the north end of Texada Island. We got Airspan back in the air and found him! I want to thank all the waterfront property owners who searched their home security cameras to figure out what direction he took. I want to thank my wife, the Gibsons IGA and friends who fed us during this terrible experience. I want to thank God for the wonderful years I was able to share with my son. RIP Jesse … RIP.
