Politicians just don’t learn

Letters

Editor:

In my experience, in four provinces over 40 years, and also working with Ottawa, politicians will not learn from the mistakes of others. They must make their own! We plebs pay the price, we are what George W. Bush referred to as “collateral damage.” In the U.K. under Thatcher and all governments since, every public service that could be sold off to the private sector or contracted out was. Care homes are just one example. They became like any other business. Their owners’ priorities are ROI, the bottom line, cash flow and profit. The most expedient way of achieving these objectives is to cut costs wherever possible. Simply take a look at how many of these care homes have been closed, or placed under special measures, following a government inspection. I have first hand experience of that system but, hey ho, when did experience of anything at all influence our politicians at every level of government?
