Opposed to name change

Letters

Editor:

This letter was sent to SCRD Area A director Leonard Lee and copied to Coast Reporter.

This serves to respond to the communication request for the proposed name change of Madeira Park to salalus. I am a resident of Madeira Park and totally opposed to the proposed change. This is yet another example of the many initiatives being undertaken without the consent of the community – in case the administration does not remember, we are the people who pay the taxes and the elected officials should be working for us.

Furthermore, the recently completed signage changes again were completed without consultation, all in an ongoing appeasement effort aimed at the natives (why?). Were such name changes proposed, I would have been agreeable but not placing our names as second class and not with the signage saying we live in the shíshálh Nation. I am a Canadian, living in B.C.

This whole issue needs to be put to a referendum as this guerrilla warfare by the natives has to be stopped!
