Hereditary rule illegitimate

Letters

Editor:

Why are protesters raising signs promoting the views of hereditary chiefs? Didn’t countries across the world, for hundreds of years, fight civil wars to rid themselves of kings and royal families? If hereditary chiefs’ views contradict the agreements made by the elected chiefs and councils, the hereditary chiefs should be ignored. Presumably these elected bands made pipeline agreements incorporating royalty agreements and employment considerations they thought would be best for their bands.

Hereditary rulers are as illegitimate in North America as they were in Europe. Unfortunately, Canada still hasn’t fully learned this lesson and still wastes tax dollars supporting its royals.
