Call for a real revolution

Letters

Editor:

Tim Turner’s call to arms (and hearts) in the Aug. 23 paper – suggesting SD46 respond to the climate emergency in their strategic plan – provoked a couple of contrary letters in last week’s paper, one questioning what an emergency really is, and the other what constitutes revolutionary thinking, this second writer believing revolution requires us to question and challenge the predominant scientific point of view.

This struck me as parallel to, in Galileo’s day, challenging the “earth rotating around the sun” hypothesis after it became the scientific norm. In both cases, science actually supports a revolution – in Galileo’s case, towards a humbler perspective of the earth’s place in the universe, and today’s climate scientists toward an economy no longer obsessed with fossil fuels, consumption and jobs at any cost.

I feel for climate scientists who, for the past 50+ years, have been our town criers, informing us of ice melt and carbon content, all the while watching as we ignore and dismiss the information.

Thank you, Mr. Turner, for reminding us about what is so obvious, but somehow bypassed, perhaps partly because we are deeply afraid of the revolution required to fix the problem.
