The 20th annual Fraser Valley Hunt Opening Meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9 at the private residence of Lynn Putland and Kenan MacKenzie in Roberts Creek.

Hosting the event is the Sunshine Coast Equestrian Club. A traditional blessing of the hunt will be led by Rev. Terri Scallon at noon. Following that, the horseback riders will be out on the trails following Fraser Valley Hunt Society’s hounds.

“It is quite a sight to see the horses thundering after the hounds as they give voice while on the scent,” reads an email invitation from Putland and MacKenzie.

The organizers use a drag scent rather than foxes, to keep the hunt humane. A guide will be available to bring audiences to areas along the route to watch the hounds and horses, and they are also invited to participate in the popular – and  competitive – Hunt Luncheon Competition, organized by Virginia Mills.

Winners with the best lunch spread, which typically includes an elaborate display in a vehicle’s trunk, will take home a bottle of Dom Pérignon. “While the riders enjoy their traditional feast, the non-riders can enjoy their hunt luncheons,” according to the invitation.

Those interested in participating in the lunch competition should call Mills at 604-885-7417 for more information.

Kenan MacKenzie and Lynn Putland can answer questions or provide additional details: 604-885-7810. Their address is 1498 Lockyer Road in Roberts Creek.

Those interested in riding in the hunt require Horse Council Insurance and must sign a waiver.
