The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is seeking nominations for its 2019 annual awards, honouring creative accomplishment and commitment to the arts in four categories: “The Frances Wasserlein Community Leadership in Arts and Culture Award recognizes significant leadership contributions as a volunteer in the arts and/or cultural events on the Sunshine Coast. The Anne and Philip Klein Visual Arts Award is for an artist pursuing an artistic passion late in life; The Gillian Lowndes Award is for an artist demonstrating long-standing achievement in their field; and The Louise Baril Memorial Music Award is for a musician undertaking advanced studies.” More information can be found at sunshinecoastartscouncil.com. The awards are handed out on Oct. 24. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30.
Members Exhibition
The Gibsons Public Art Gallery Members Exhibition is coming up in October. Titled Present Tense, it’s an unjuried show open to all members of the gallery who are artists and makers, in all mediums. (Membership is $20, $10 for students and $35 for families.) Those interested are asked to submit one piece that has been created within the last two years. The deadline is 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, and “no late applications will be accepted.” The exhibit will run from Oct. 10 to Nov. 3. Guidelines and the submission form can be found at www.gpag.ca.
Woman at War
With the arrival of September comes another season of screenings by Sunshine Coast Film Society. The first feature is the highly acclaimed 2018 Icelandic comedy/drama Woman at War. The quirky film tells the story of Halla, “an unassuming middle aged choir master living a secret life as an environmental activist, who takes on the local aluminum industry.” The musical interludes and gorgeously filmed landscapes of rural Iceland help create a collage of experiences. Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt and Monday, Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m. at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. Members $5, non-members $9. Sing out
The Pender Harbour Choir is beginning it 47th season and rehearsals begin Tuesday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m. at the Pender Harbour School of Music. “Singers aged 11 to 100+ are welcome and no audition is required, though ability to read music is an asset.” For more information, call director Kenneth Norman Johnson, at 778-227-8430.
Carving demos
• On Saturday, Sept. 7, there’s another open invitation to “carve a notch into the Reconciliation Totem Pole,” with shíshálh Master Carver ?antuni Tony Paul, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., under the tent at the side parking lot by Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt.
• The 20-year-anniversary exhibit by Squamish artist Jody Broomfield at Gibsons Art Gallery is coming to an end, but not before he offers a free a carving demonstration on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Pieces of Me
Vancouver painter Justine Andrew is the featured artist at the Kube this month. Influenced by the pop art movement early in her career, Andrew’s paintings now “teeter between design and abstraction.” There’s an opening reception for her exhibit, Pieces of Me, at the Gibsons gallery on Friday, Sept. 6, 6 to 9 p.m.
At the pubs
• On Friday, Sept. 6, the Latin Funk All Stars heat up the 101 Brewhouse in Gibsons starting at 8:30 p.m., $10 cover.
• Also wear some shoes you can dance in for the solid rock rhythms of Playback, who are back at Gibsons Legion on Saturday, Sept. 7, 8 p.m. with the Jack Talks Back tour, $5 for members, $10 guests.
• At the Sechelt Legion on Saturday, it’s Bonnie Kilroe as The Divas, “A One-Woman Show. Vegas meets Vaudeville celebrity impersonation spectacle.” It’s a show the Vancouver performer has been doing for years, with tours from Victoria to St. John’s, 8 to 10 p.m., $25.
Tatewari
The Mexican flamenco-fusion quartet Tatewari is on a Canadian tour, with a stop at Halfmoon Haven on Monday, Sept. 9, from 7 to 10 p.m. Advance tickets $20, 604-562-2025, $25 at the door, at 8505 Redrooffs Rd.
Moving poetry
A shoutout for Sunshine Coast poet Marion Quednau who is among the small group of B.C. writers whose work will be displayed this year and next on Skytrain and in transit buses across the province as part of the Poetry in Transit program. Quednau’s Paradise, Later Years, is published by Caitlin Press of Halfmoon Bay.
