Yet another school year begins. There will be children at our elementary school, marvelling at the new playground, finding new ways to get scrapes and bruises to confound the designers’ attempt to take ALL the fun out of it. There will be school buses to stop for, as they load and unload our most precious of cargo. For those who would pass a stopped school bus, a $368 fine for a first offence (too low in my eyes), a second ticket is $668, and a third will run over $1,000, with three penalty points on top of each fine. I want to see cameras on board – I have seen too many drivers ignore the buses far too often.
SD46 gave us four choices for our children’s education this year. Regardless of which option you have chosen, you, my friend, are doing your best for you and your child. Our teachers are doing their best for our children and our community. They are building a plane while it is in flight. Missteps will be made, stress levels are maxed out, the most important thing we can do right now is, be kind. Be patient. Be understanding. I will gift you a word that I try to remember in tough times: SONDER– noun: the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. The community hall has something in common with my porch – they are both now sporting a new roof! Many thanks to the RCCA and our friends who donated to help keep this community asset in good nick! And thanks to my son Max for holding the other end of those corrugated sheets while we wrestled them into place!
We have had a fabulous run of beautiful weather round these parts but the approaching season will bring its usual inclement weather, so you should take advantage of the live entertainment yet available in our neck of the woods, eh?
Klezmer-punk Geoff Berner brings his ear candy to the Roberts Creek Legion front lawn Friday, Sept. 11. Performing from Berlin to London, Oslo to Zurich, Seattle to Toronto, Orange Road to Largo, Berner will be here to play from his 8th album, Grand Hotel Cosmopolis.
Saturday, Sept. 12 at the #219 has Small Town Artillery. A B.C. band with a lush sound and a few things to say. My advice? Get to this one!
The Burying Ground – Sunday the 13th matinee. I cannot think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than being swept away to another time by this class act. The band will be performing as a quartet for this show with Clara Rose on fiddle/harmonies and Wynston Minckler on upright bass
Billy Hillpicker Band is a comin’! Friday the 18th! Yee Haw!
If anyone has heaters to lend for the Legion lawn it would be much appreciated; their licence brings them (and us) to Halloween so it may be a bit chilly all too soon.
