Elphinstone: How is everyone?

As we shelter in place, now’s the time to read, listen to music, talk with friends or learn something new. It goes without saying that the April meeting of the Elphinstone Community Association has been cancelled (Wed. April 8 at Frank West Hall).

As we shelter in place, now’s the time to read, listen to music, talk with friends or learn something new. It goes without saying that the April meeting of the Elphinstone Community Association has been cancelled (Wed. April 8 at Frank West Hall). It was supposed to be the AGM so if one happens in May, it will be the ECA AGM. If you’re considering joining the board, please let the ECA know by emailing elphinstonecommunity19@gmail.com. It’s fun and not too much work.

The board submitted a grant-in-aid request to cover off a couple of things and also for some materials and plants for a planned Jim and Doreen Bartley memorial garden. Director Marc sent out a message that if anyone needs anything picked up, there are people ready to help; contact the above email. We’ve had offers of help from several people.

I found it easy to order groceries from IGA by email iga056@igabc.com – so convenient if you’re housebound. Persephone delivered them for free (but donations are appreciated if you can). Be specific and remember to include your phone number and address. Both our local nurseries are also delivering, and what better activity than getting out in the garden, especially on nice days. Quality Garden and Pet on Pratt Road will deliver; phone them at 604-886-7527 or email happy@qualitygardenandpet.com. B&K Garden & Landscape Supply, also on Pratt Road, will deliver too – phone 604-886-0924 or email bksoils@gmail.com

Have you been hearing the frog chorus? I guess no one told our tree frog friends there is a crisis going on as they are singing their hearts out (and probably not social distancing) as the annual spring serenade is in full swing. I’m also enjoying the songbird choristers, trilling and piping heartily from trees and bushes. With the craziness of what’s going on in the human world, how nice that nature carries on with her rhythms.

Are you joining in the 7 p.m. shout-outs? People are heading out to their porches or front steps every evening to join in a neighbourhood chorus to thank those in the community who are on the front lines for us. In a rural area like ours, I cannot see my neighbours who are likewise doing this – but I can hear them. I even heard a bagpipe one evening! In these times of physical distancing, it’s great to know that we’re in this together.
