What do newspaper reading under the trees, ukulele under the tent and tech help between the glass have in common? These classes and services are now available at the Sechelt Public Library.
While caution still abounds for most, we are all missing that human connection so vital to our well-being. Zoom is not for everyone, so library staff are developing small size group activities that can be done very safely on the grounds of the library.

While library patrons are loving our “surprise packages” and our Takeout Service remains in high demand, we have also taken this opportunity to make some internal improvements to the library space.
These include: new custom wood shelving to house themed displays, wall graphics, development of what we affectionately call the “Room of Requirement” at the back of the library for exam invigilation, small meetings, small classes, genealogy appointments, taxes, etc., installation of a new interior door, privacy graphics on windows and doors, painting, framing of long lost art, protective glass installation, changes in the teen area for computer and gaming, installation of highly visible directional signage, completion of check-in area custom finishing, redesign of magazine sections, custom extension for reference desk and a much overdue staff work area extension.
Big projects and lots of disruption! In conjunction with the District of Sechelt, which is addressing building envelope issues, we are also working on plans to raise the children’s section floor areas to increase the flexibility in overall floor space utilization.
Vital to our operation at this time and moving forward, the District of Sechelt has agreed to allow us temporary sole access to our shared community room to house books in 72-hour quarantine, a public access computer and the tech help desk.
The library is full of Takeout Service packages awaiting pickup and once we reopen, when all projects are complete, we will need to use the community room to house them as well.
